Helsinki Library Design Competition
This competition called for design proposals for the Central Library in Helsinki, Finland. Our submission complements the library’s programming wishes while enhancing this vibrant and historical site. The resulting design reflects the project’s educational focus while honoring the library’s history.
We focused on greening the library and its public spaces. To reach this goal, we proposed a crescent-shaped exterior featuring large glass windows with sweeping city views. In front of the library, a park and public square welcome visitors and provide spaces for employees to convene outdoors. At the south entrance canopy, a large cutout serves as an open and inviting welcome for guests. As an added benefit, white granite panels line the public entrance to create thermal efficiency. Additional sustainable elements include a roof with photovoltaic panels, and a solar hot water system.
